Belgium’s Copper Imports Jump to $1.5B, with Rising Supplies from Bulgaria and Spain

In 2020, Bulgaria (84K tonnes) constituted the largest copper supplier to Belgium, accounting for a 48% share of total imports. Moreover, copper imports from Bulgaria exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Spain (41K tonnes), twofold. Namibia (27K tonnes) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 15% share.

In value terms, Bulgaria ($734M) constituted the largest supplier of copper to Belgium, comprising 51% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Namibia ($251M), with a 17% share of total imports, and it was followed by Spain, with a 16% share.

In 2020, the purchases from Bulgaria grew by +48.9% y-o-y in physical terms and by +59.5% y-o-y in value terms. The supplies from Spain rose by +13.8% y-o-y in physical terms and by +26.9% y-o-y in value terms.

In 2020, the average copper import price amounted to $8,266 per tonne, picking up by +11% against the previous year. There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2020, the country with the highest price was Germany, while the price for Spain was amongst the lowest. In 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany, while the prices for the other significant suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Germany’s Animal Feed Preparation Exports Hit Record Highs

Germany steadily expands exports of animal feed preparations. Over the past decade, the volume of exports increased from 2.4M tonnes to 3M tonnes while the export value doubled to $3.6B. The Netherlands, Poland and France remain the largest importers of animal feed preparations from Germany, accounting for 48% of the total export volume. The UK recorded the highest spike in purchases from Germany last year. The average export price for animal feed preparations rose by +11% y-o-y to $1,199 per tonne.

In value terms, preparations for animal feeding exports skyrocketed by +15.7% y-o-y to $3.6B (IndexBox estimates) in 2020. In the past decade, the value of exports grew twofold.

The Netherlands (774K tonnes), Poland (442K tonnes) and France (229K tonnes) were the main destinations of preparations for animal feeding exports from Germany, with a combined 48% share of total exports. Denmark, Austria, Norway, the Czech Republic, Belgium, the UK, Italy, Luxembourg, Switzerland and Hungary lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 39%.

In value terms, Poland ($517M), the Netherlands ($397M) and Austria ($340M) were the largest markets for preparations for animal feeding exported from Germany worldwide, with a combined 34% share of total exports. France, the UK, Italy, Switzerland, Denmark, the Czech Republic, Belgium, Norway, Hungary and Luxembourg lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 43%. Among the leading countries of destination, the UK saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports (+26% y-o-y), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2020, the average export price for animal feed preparations amounted to $1,199 per tonne, increasing by +11% against the previous year. There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2020, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($2,805 per tonne), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands ($513 per tonne) was amongst the lowest. In 2020, the most notable growth rate in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Poland, while the prices for the other significant destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Germany’s Polyamide Exports to Set New Record This Year

German polyamide exports may reach a new record in 2021, rebounding after two years of decline. In the first half of this year, Germany exported 424K tonnes of polyamides worth $1.55B against 348K or $1.12B in the same period in 2020. Germany remains the world’s largest polyamide supplier, accounting for 19% of global exports. Italy, Belgium and France are the key importers of polyamides from Germany. Turkey recorded the highest spike in imports from Germany. In 2020, the average polyamide export price amounted to $3,205 per tonne, down by -7.7% y-o-y. 


Germany’s Polyamide Exports by Country 

In the first half of 2021, Germany exported 424K tonnes of polyamides worth $1.55B, which was 22% more in physical terms and 38% more in value terms than the figures of the same period of 2020. Germany leads in global polyamide exports, supplying 19% of the total volume.

In 2020, approx. 713K tonnes of polyamides in primary forms were exported from Germany; declining by -9.3% on the year before. In value terms, polyamide exports contracted dramatically to $2.3B (IndexBox estimates) in 2020. German exports peaked in 2018, reaching $2.98B.

Italy (100K tonnes), Belgium (72K tonnes) and France (45K tonnes) were the main destinations of polyamide exports from Germany, with a combined 30% share of total exports. Poland, Turkey, the Czech Republic, Austria, the U.S., China, Spain, South Korea, Hungary and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 42%.

In value terms, the largest markets for polyamide exported from Germany were Italy ($243M), Belgium ($224M) and Poland ($148M), with a combined 27% share of total exports. France, the Czech Republic, China, the U.S., Austria, Turkey, Spain, Hungary, the UK and South Korea lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 44%.

Among the main countries of destination, Turkey recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.

In 2020, the average polyamide export price amounted to $3,205 per tonne, with a decrease of -7.7% against the previous year. Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination; the country with the highest price was China, while the average price for exports to South Korea was amongst the lowest.

Global toothpaste imports reduced modestly to $4.1B in 2020. The U.S., Russia, and the UK constitute the largest dentifrice importers worldwide, while China leads global exports. The countries with the highest levels of toothpaste imports in 2020 were the U.S. (53K tonnes), Russia (46K tonnes), the UK (39K tonnes), Germany (36K tonnes), Canada (29K tonnes), Italy (28K tonnes), France (27K tonnes), China (27K tonnes), Malaysia (26K tonnes), Japan (26K tonnes), Poland (24K tonnes) and Hong Kong SAR (23K tonnes), together resulting at 41% of total import. The Netherlands (22K tonnes) followed a long way behind the leaders.

In value terms, the largest toothpaste importing markets worldwide were China ($223M), the U.S. ($200M) and Canada ($181M), with a combined 15% share of global imports. Germany, the UK, France, Russia, the Netherlands, Poland, Italy, Malaysia, Hong Kong SAR and Japan lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 29%. Malaysia emerged as the fastest-growing importer of dentifrices in 2020, ramping up the supplies from $95M to $101M over the last year.

The average toothpaste import price stood at $4,418 per tonne in 2020, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2020, the country with the highest price was China, while Japan was amongst the lowest. In 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

World’s Largest Toothpaste Exporters

In 2020, China (213K tonnes), distantly followed by Poland (95K tonnes), Thailand (68K tonnes), Slovakia (67K tonnes), Germany (66K tonnes) and the UK (43K tonnes) represented the main exporters of toothpaste, denture cleaners and other dentifrices, together constituting 62% of total exports. Mexico (34K tonnes), France (25K tonnes), the U.S. (23K tonnes), India (23K tonnes), Guatemala (15K tonnes) and Viet Nam (14K tonnes) took a relatively small share of total exports.

In value terms, the largest toothpaste supplying countries worldwide were China ($415M), Germany ($385M) and Poland ($370M), together accounting for 31% of global exports. These countries were followed by Slovakia, the U.S., Thailand, the UK, Mexico, France, India, Guatemala and Viet Nam, which together accounted for a further 39%.

Despite last year drop in global toothpaste imports, China exceeded to boost its exports by +9.3 y-o-y in physical terms and by +5.7% y-o-y in value terms. Russia became the key destination for toothpaste exported from China, accounting for nearly 14% of Chinese exports.

Sweden Ramps Up Expanded Clay Imports

European expanded clay imports continue to grow steadily. In 2020, imports reached 570K tonnes, increasing at an average rate of +3.9% y-o-y over the past eight years. Germany holds leadership in European imports. Ranking second in terms of import volume, Sweden emerged as the fastest-growing importer from 2012 to 2020. Last year, Sweden expanded clay imports boosted to 108K tonnes. In 2020, the average import price reached $334 per tonne, flattening against the previous year. 

European Clay Imports by Country

In 2020, expanded clay imports in the EU shrank modestly to 570K tonnes, approximately reflecting 2019 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the period from 2012 to 2020. In value terms, expanded clays imports declined to $191M (IndexBox estimates) in 2020.

In 2020, Germany (135K tonnes) and Sweden (108K tonnes) were the largest importers of expanded clays in the EU, together finishing at approx. 43% of total imports. The Netherlands (55K tonnes) ranks next in terms of total imports with a 9.6% share, followed by Estonia (8.7%), France (6.5%), Spain (5.8%) and Portugal (4.8%). Italy (21K tonnes), Latvia (20K tonnes), Lithuania (20K tonnes) and the Czech Republic (16K tonnes) followed a long way behind the leaders.

In value terms, the largest expanded clays importing markets in the EU were Germany ($42M), Italy ($24M) and Sweden ($20M), together accounting for 45% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Sweden, while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth. Sweden ramped up its clay imports from 6K tonnes in 2012 to 108K in 2020. In value terms, Sweden’s imports grew from $8M to $20M over this period.

The expanded clay import price in the EU stood at $334 per tonne in 2020, flattening at the previous year. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 22% y-o-y. The level of import peaked at $508 per tonne in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2020, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure. Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination; the country with the highest price was Italy, while Estonia was amongst the lowest. From 2012 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Latvia, while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest persimmon supplying countries worldwide were Spain ($234M), China ($206M) and Azerbaijan ($92M), with a combined 77% share of global exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, China (+62.1% per year) and Uzbekistan (+48% per year) have the highest growth rates of the value of exports.

In 2020, the average persimmon export price amounted to $1,091 per tonne, picking up by +6.4% against the previous year. There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2020, the country with the highest price was China ($1,909 per tonne), while Uzbekistan ($499 per tonne) was amongst the lowest. In 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Lithuania, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

World’s Largest Persimmon Importers

Russia represented the major importer of persimmons globally, with the volume of imports resulting at 149K tonnes, which was approx. 27% of total imports in 2020. Kazakhstan (58K tonnes) occupied the second position in the ranking, followed by Germany (55K tonnes), Ukraine (40K tonnes), Italy (31K tonnes), Thailand (28K tonnes) and France (28K tonnes). All these countries together occupied an approx. 44% share of total imports. Belarus (19K tonnes), Lithuania (16K tonnes), Poland (12K tonnes), Canada (9.3K tonnes) and the UK (8.4K tonnes) held minor shares of total imports.

In value terms, Russia ($120M), Germany ($75M) and France ($37M) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2020, together comprising 43% of global imports. These countries were followed by Ukraine, Italy, Kazakhstan, Thailand, Canada, Lithuania, Belarus, Poland and the UK, which together accounted for a further 32%.

In value terms, the U.S. ($209M), the Netherlands ($113M) and India ($65M) were the largest markets for cocoa butter exported from Indonesia, together comprising 49% of total exports.

In 2020, Indonesian supplies to the U.S. fell by -$54M compared to the previous year. By contrast, exports to Australia (+$16M), India (+$15M), Estonia (+$10M), United Arab Emirates (+$9M) and the Netherlands (+$9M) increased.

In 2020, the average cocoa butter export price amounted to $5,474 per tonne. Average prices varied noticeably for the major foreign markets. In 2020, the highest prices were recorded for prices to the United Arab Emirates ($5,659 per tonne) and China ($5,587 per tonne), while the average prices for exports to Germany ($5,172 per tonne) and the Netherlands ($5,394 per tonne) were amongst the lowest. The countries with the highest volumes of wheat gluten production in 2020 were France (242K tonnes), China (159K tonnes) and Belgium (158K tonnes), together comprising 50% of global production. These countries were followed by Germany, Australia, Russia, Lithuania, the UK, Poland, Italy and Austria, which together accounted for a further 48%.

Wheat Gluten Exports by Country

Global wheat gluten exports amounted to 928K tonnes in 2020, increasing by 6% against the previous year. In value terms, wheat gluten exports dropped from $1.4B in 2019 to $1.3B (IndexBox estimates) in 2020.

In 2020, Belgium (135K tonnes), Germany (132K tonnes), France (125K tonnes), Australia (110K tonnes) and China (88K tonnes) were the major wheat gluten exporters in the world, together comprising 64% of total export. Poland (58K tonnes) occupied the next position in the ranking, followed by Russia (52K tonnes), Lithuania (50K tonnes), the UK (47K tonnes) and the Netherlands (43K tonnes). All these countries together took near 27% share of total exports.

In value terms, Germany ($211M), Belgium ($178M) and France ($170M) featured the highest levels of exports in 2020, together comprising 42% of global exports. These countries were followed by Australia, China, Poland, Lithuania, Russia, the UK and the Netherlands, which together accounted for a further 47%.

The UK (+88% y-o-y) and Poland (+33% y-o-y) saw the highest gluten export spikes in value terms. At the same time, the Netherlands (-28% y-o-y), Belgium (-20% y-o-y) and France (-14% y-o-y) recorded the most prominent drop in supplies abroad.

The average wheat gluten export price stood at $1,423 per tonne in 2020, decreasing by -9% against the previous year. Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2020, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Germany ($1,597 per tonne) and Australia ($1,525 per tonne), while the UK ($1,274 per tonne) and China ($1,283 per tonne) were amongst the lowest. In 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China, while the other global leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Wheat Gluten Consumption by Country

In 2020, the highest levels of wheat gluten per capita consumption were registered in Norway (39 kg per person), followed by Belgium (4.38 kg per person), France (2.61 kg per person) and the Netherlands (2.21 kg per person). The world average per capita consumption of wheat gluten was estimated at 0.15 kg per person.

The average export price for decaffeinated coffee jumped by +5.6% y-o-y to $4,618 per tonne in 2020. The U.S., Spain and the Netherlands continue to lead in global decaffeinated coffee imports.

Global decaffeinated coffee exports dropped to 319K tonnes in 2020, with a decrease of -14.3% compared with the year before. In value terms, decaffeinated coffee exports reduced from $1.6B in 2019 to $1.5B (IndexBox estimates) in 2020.

Germany constitutes the major exporter of decaffeinated coffee in the world, with the volume of exports amounting to 153K tonnes, which was approx. 48% of total exports in 2020. In Germany, decaffeinated coffee exports declined by -2.6% over the last year.

Viet Nam (24K tonnes) held a 7.5% share (based on tonnes) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Switzerland (7.4%), Spain (6.6%), Canada (5.9%) and Colombia (5.1%). Mexico (10K tonnes) and France (7.7K tonnes) occupied a minor share of total exports.

In value terms, Germany ($480M) remains the largest decaffeinated coffee supplier worldwide, comprising 33% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Switzerland ($219M), with a 15% share of global exports. It was followed by France, with a 9.1% share.

In 2020, the average decaffeinated coffee export price amounted to $4,618 per tonne, picking up by +5.6% against the previous year. Prices varied noticeably by country of origin. The country with the highest price was France, while Viet Nam was amongst the lowest. World’s Largest Importers of Decaffeinated Coffee

The U.S. remains the largest importing country with an import of about 101K tonnes, which accounted for 41% of total imports. In 2020, the U.S. reduced its purchases by -7.8% against the previous year. Germany was the largest supplier of decaffeinated coffee to the U.S. last year.

Spain (34K tonnes) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 14% share, followed by the Netherlands (5.6%) and Switzerland (4.6%). France (11K tonnes), Italy (10K tonnes), the UK (9.5K tonnes), Canada (5.7K tonnes), Saudi Arabia (4.1K tonnes), Mexico (4K tonnes) and South Korea (3.9K tonnes) held a minor share of total imports.

In value terms, the U.S. ($411M) constitutes the largest market for imported decaffeinated coffee worldwide, comprising 33% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Spain ($121M), with a 9.8% share of global imports. It was followed by France, with a 7.7% share.

Over the past decade, global exports of glycerol increased twofold, both in volume and value terms. In 2020, global exports of glycerol were estimated at 1.9M tonnes, increasing by +8.5% against the year before. In value terms, exports rose by +2.3% y-o-y to $1.3B (IndexBox estimates) in 2020.

In 2020, Indonesia (524K tonnes), distantly followed by Malaysia (331K tonnes), Germany (263K tonnes), the Netherlands (223K tonnes) and Brazil (95K tonnes) represented the main exporters of glycerol, mixing up 77% of total exports. Argentina (69K tonnes), Thailand (43K tonnes), Belgium (38K tonnes), the U.S. (33K tonnes) and Poland (29K tonnes) held a little share of total exports.

In value terms, Indonesia ($310M), Germany ($219M) and Malaysia ($209M) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2020, with a combined 58% share of global exports. The Netherlands, Brazil, the U.S., Belgium, Argentina, Thailand and Poland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 28%.

In 2020, the average glycerol export price amounted to $681 per tonne, falling by -5.7% against the previous year. There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2020, the country with the highest price was the U.S., while Argentina was amongst the lowest. In 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Key Glycerol Importers

In 2020, China (427K tonnes), distantly followed by the U.S. (141K tonnes) and the Netherlands (127K tonnes) represented the key importers of glycerol, together comprising 36% of total imports. The following importers – Japan (76K tonnes), France (66K tonnes), South Korea (61K tonnes), the UK (56K tonnes), India (55K tonnes), Mexico (52K tonnes), Spain (49K tonnes), Italy (45K tonnes), Thailand (45K tonnes) and Germany (44K tonnes) – together made up 29% of total imports.

In value terms, the largest glycerol importing markets worldwide were China ($232M), the U.S. ($121M) and the Netherlands ($65M), with a combined 33% share of global imports. These countries were followed by Japan, France, South Korea, the UK, Spain, Germany, Italy, Mexico, India and Thailand, which together accounted for a further 31%.

South Korea saw the highest imports growth rate, doubling the value of purchases from abroad last year. Among other largest importers, India, China, the Netherlands, Italy, France, the UK, Spain and the Czech Republic ramped up their imports significantly in 2020.
