desantis

YES, VIRGINIA, THERE IS A DESANTIS CLAUSE

Where some see a stocking full of coal, others see opportunity. Take Florida Governor Ron DeSantis—please! That might be the sentiments of officials at congested seaports outside of the Sunshine State. For instance, there are the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, California, where, at press time, Christmas presents remain stranded in around 100 vessels waiting for docks. While the intervention of President Joe Biden has led to plans for 24/7 loading and unloading of containers at impacted terminals in Southern California and elsewhere, challenges remained (again, at time of publication) to implement the strategy. Some have even suggested that open-all-day-and-night operations fail to address the real problems, like the lack of truck drivers and already packed-to-the-brim warehouses.

And so, against that chaotic backdrop, DeSantis announced on Oct. 19 that Florida seaports have open capacity, can meet holiday demand and—hey, all you shippers muttering “Bah humbug”—come on down.

“Year after year we continue to invest in our seaports, in infrastructure and in workforce education to make sure our supply chain is resilient,” said Da Gov, who was flanked by officials from Port Everglades, Port Tampa Bay, Port Panama City and host Port of Jacksonville (JAXPORT). “I’m especially proud of Florida’s seaports. They are crown jewels in our state.”

Yes, and those jewels have been shined with $1 billion in state investments since 2019, according to his office. Controversial because of his ties to former President Donald Trump and the supposed “steal,” DeSantis may have distanced himself even more from certain other attendees of U.S. governor conventions by suggesting shippers and out-of-state businesses should choose Florida.

“While other U.S. ports are just now announcing around-the-clock operations, in Florida many of our ports are used to serving Florida farmers, families and businesses with 24-hour operations,” he said. “As the rest of the nation faces rampant inflation and businesses stare down unprecedented supply chain problems, our message is this: Florida is here, we have capacity, we have incentive packages to help businesses who want to move here and we are going to make sure Americans get their Christmas Gifts this season.”

Vector Takes “Logistics with Purpose” to the Next Level

Global commercial shipping provider, Vector Logistics, announced its first-ever effort towards environmental wellness for client utilization this week. Carbon offsets is the main focus of Vector’s environmental service, established through the company’s partnership with the nonprofit Carbonfund.org Foundation. Not only does this enable clients to increase contributions towards a sustainable supply chain, but it also supports positive long-term effects on the industry as a whole.

“At Vector, we believe that a few caring people can and will change the world. And the truth is, we only have one world to share,” says CEO, Enrique Alvarez. “We are compelled to make clean, sustainable shipping a reality. ”

Living up to its primary value of “logistics with a purpose,” Vector selected Carbonfund.org due to its leading position in efforts against climate change and support of a cleaner business climate. Information released today confirmed that the nonprofit’s projects are always validated through a third party and vetted against the highest standards.

The carbon offsets effort is one of several options Vector will add to its environmental solutions portfolio. The company confirmed that additional options are in the works for 2022 to further support client goals in reducing their overall environmental footprint.

“Doing the right thing is a must, and there’s no time to waste. Together, we can make a difference both now and for generations to come,” Alvarez added.

“New Kid on the Block” Networking Platform Addresses Sourcing Amid Supply Chain Crisis

Best known for bringing manufacturers, reps, and merchants together, B2B networking platform company, Factrees, announced the release of its newest platform aimed at addressing nearshore sourcing bottlenecks amid the supply chain shipping crisis.

Driven by the power of artificial intelligence, the newly launched platform provides a reliable resource library consisting of searchable U.S. manufacturers, independent sales reps, distributors, wholesalers, and retailers for customers to select for sourcing. Companies can network and connect based on product lines, territory, services offered, and business relationships.

“We are creating a sourcing community that simplifies and expedites the process of finding quality sourcing partners while reducing the dependency on word-of-mouth and tradeshow marketing for driving growth,” said Keith Williams, Factrees Co-Founder and CEO.

Factrees is the new kid on the block,” he adds.

Adding to the platform’s appeal is the option for companies to share their experiences with manufacturers and distributors — including reviews, ratings, and the option of messaging and real-time video meetings.

“There is a groundswell of realignment between manufacturers and sales representatives,” said Ron Smith, President & CEO of Curtis Stout. “Factrees is offering valuable tools; a professional approach to connect and match all manufacturers with quality sales agents.”

Through a series of straightforward and simplified steps, companies can utilize the platform and begin connecting once a profile has been created and claimed. This process supports efforts in getting products to customers from the factory.

“I have been in the industry for 30 years. Factrees is a very creative concept supported by a very helpful web interface, said Paul Entwistle, COO Hardware Industry. “I believe those who use it will have an advantage over those who don’t.”

LOGISTICS HEROES RECOGNIZED FOR COVID-19 AND WILDFIRE RELIEF EFFORTS

Whether it is hunger, wildfires, or a global pandemic, the logistics industry is there for us. On Sept. 21, the American Logistics Aid Network (ALAN) singled out some of these supply chain heroes with 2021 Humanitarian Logistics Awards. “Today we have a chance to recognize a group of outstanding companies and individuals who exemplify what selfless logistics is all about,” said ALAN Executive Director Kathy Futon. “This year’s recipients have truly inspired us, because when the chips have been down, they’ve repeatedly stepped up to help–all without asking what’s in it for them.” This year’s recipients include:

-CEVA Logistics, which received ALAN’s Outstanding Contribution to Disaster Relief Award for moving multiple shipments of supplies to support Native American tribes and various non-profits throughout the COVID-19 crisis and after the Oregon fires.

-Palmer Logistics, which received ALAN’s Outstanding Contribution to Disaster Relief Award for providing essential short-term storage of hospital beds on behalf of a medical non-profit and for its ongoing support of USAID.

-Core-Mark International, which received ALAN’s Outstanding Contribution to Disaster Relief Award for the long-term loan of two freezer tractor-trailers and driver resources that enabled the Arkansas Food Bank to distribute two million extra pounds of donated food during COVID-19.

-J.B. Hunt Transport Services, which received ALAN’s Outstanding Contribution to Disaster Relief Award for its assistance with multiple compassionate moves during 2020 and 2021, including helping ALAN and the Salvation Army distribute meal kits.

-American Trucking Associations, which received ALAN’s Outstanding Contribution to Disaster Relief Award deploying two of its image show trucks and drivers to deliver numerous compassionate shipments of food, cleaning supplies, PPE and medical supplies throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

-Tucker Company Worldwide, which received ALAN’s Director’s Partnership Award for supporting ALAN’s analytical efforts during the pandemic.

-Truckstop.com, which received ALAN’s Director’s Partnership Award for consistently sharing information about freight marketing activities with members of ALAN’s partner network during various crises.

“Each of these recipients is living proof that humanitarianism isn’t just a one-time event–and that true service extends well beyond a single disaster,” Fulton said. “It truly is part of their DNA and personal passion. The world truly is a better place because of all of them.”

truckers

Let’s Hear It for Truckers.

Given the industry’s shortage of truckers, and the mess that has created along the supply chain, mid-September’s National Truck Driver Appreciation Week took on added meaning this year.

Palmetto, Florida’s Port Manatee treated more than 200 truckers to lunches and jam-packed goody bags on Sept. 17, the final day of the weeklong celebration.

“Port Manatee is truly blessed to be served by these devoted professional drivers,” said Reggie Bellamy, chairman of the Manatee County Port Authority. “Especially in these challenging times, truckers have gone above and beyond in demonstrating their commitment to keeping the supply chain running smoothly.

A. Duie Pyle, a premier provider of asset and non-asset-based supply chain solutions, on Sept. 13 recognized 25 of its less-than-truckload (LTL) drivers for achieving the Million Mile Safe Driver milestone in 2020. Overall, the West Chester, Pennsylvania-based company has had 171 One Million Mile Drivers, 23 Two Million Mile Drivers, and two Three Million Mile Drivers.

“These drivers are true professionals,” said Pete Dannecker, Pyle’s VP of Risk and Integrated Resources, “and I congratulate them for their dedication to safe driving in the congested Northeastern metropolitan region in which A. Duie Pyle operates.”

Free grub, goody bags and safety recognition are nice, but one thing that is usually better appreciated is cold hard cash. That’s what Mark-it Express, an intermodal trucking and freight brokerage company headquartered in Lemont, Illinois, provided to its Land of Lincoln truckers effective Aug. 2 of this year.

“In appreciation for their loyalty, commitment and value the team,” the company announced Mark-it Express drivers in Illinois are now receiving $27 an hour without the Hazardous Materials endorsement and $30 an hour with the endorsement. Mark-it drivers at the Detroit and Kansas City terminals also got pay bumps. “We have been saying over and over that we appreciate our drivers and see how hard you are working,” said Mark-it President Tony Apa.

“Thank you all again–we wouldn’t be here without you.”
