GT USA Wilmington Welcomes ACME-Hardesty,  A New Customer to The Port of Wilmington

GT USA Wilmington recently welcomed the M/V PORTHOS, a General Cargo  Ship built in 2011, carrying a cargo of glycerin from Malaysia for the Acme-Hardesty company to  the Port of Wilmington, Delaware.

A new customer to the Port of Wilmington, Acme-Hardesty began operations more than 80 years  ago, as a division of Jacob Stern and Sons. Today, the company is one of the largest distributors  of castor oils and derivatives, palm derivatives, preservatives and surfactants and renewable  palm-based glycerin, fatty acids and fatty alcohols.

The shipment of glycerin off loaded in Wilmington is utilized in the manufacturing of many  product categories, i.e., hand sanitizers, personal care, cosmetics and cleaning products.

Representatives from the company, Matt Hoyle, Director Supply Chain, Aurelio Castilla, Manager  of International Operations, Caren Dres-Hajeski, Vice President Personal Care and Marketing  were on hand to view operations on day one.

The cargo of glycerin had previously been shipped in containers, but due to continued challenges  caused by the global shortage of containers, Acme-Hardesty thought “outside the box” and  transitioned to a bulk method of shipping to ensure they eliminated any delay in their supply to their customers. Their decision paid off and GT USA Wilmington is honored to have played a part  in assisting the company with this.

Matt Howle, Director, Supply Chain for Acme-Hardesty said ”By working with our Terminal  Partner, GT USA, and our Delaware Warehouse Partner, Sardo and Sons, Acme-Hardesty Supply  Chain has taken the next step in achieving our strategy of Reliable Sustainable Freight. We have  collaborated with our partners to establish a new stream of freight for Acme-Hardesty imports  utilizing break bulk vessels. These open hull ships provide Acme-Hardesty the ability to bring in  large shipments of our most important products without the impact of the global container  restraints. Partners like GT USA and Sardo and Sons have been incredible full-service partners  who have shown to work seamlessly with Acme-Hardesty to be successful in our entry into break  bulk. We look forward to many more shipments with these vessels as they will continue to play an  important role in our overall supply chain network.”

The vessel was unloaded over the course of two days and operations went ahead safely and  efficiently, with the product being moved very quickly to its final destination.

Joe Cruise, CEO of GT USA Wilmington, “We are delighted to welcome Acme-Hardesty to the  Port of Wilmington and to be able to host their team to personally see these operations first hand. We are really very pleased that they were able to witness the amazing work by our union  partners in unloading this cargo in a safe and timely manner.”

The Port of Wilmington Handles 155-foot Wind Turbine Blades

GT USA Wilmington welcomed the MV POTTERSGRACHT, a general cargo ship, with its load of 78 wind turbine blades. The blades, manufactured in Canada are destined for a GE project in West Virginia.

Exhibiting the diversity of cargo handling capabilities, the Port of Wilmington carefully and successfully discharged the wind turbine blades, that are over 200 feet in length and weigh more than 13.5 tons each and transported them the short distance to the on-port storage area.

The MV POTTERSGRACHT is returning to the Port of Gaspe, Quebec, Canada where she will take on another 75 wind turbine blades destined for Wilmington in late May/early
June.

The Port of Wilmington is one of the United States’ primary gateways for fresh fruits. Its 2021-2022 winter fruit season is well under way and imports are regularly in bound from Morocco and Chile. The Port has worked hard to put itself in a good position to take advantage of new business from all over the world due to the supply chain crisis. The work has been rewarded with an increase in throughput of cargoes such as juices, rice, lumber and plywood and now wind blades.

USS DELAWARE Arrives at the Port of Wilmington

GT USA Wilmington (GTW) has welcomed the arrival of the USS
DELAWARE (SSN 791) to the Port of Wilmington on its maiden call to its namesake State.

On the berth to oversee the arrival of the USS DELAWARE were Delaware’s Governor John Carney and Secretary of State, Jeffrey Bullock, along with representatives of the US Navy.

GT USA Wilmington’s Chief Executive Officer, Joe Cruise, stood alongside the dignitaries to meet Captain of the Boat, Commander Matthew G. Horton, USN. The captain took time to meet with each of the dignitaries before continuing with his regular duties.

The USS DELAWARE (SSN 791) is a Virginia-class attack submarine. She was christened in October 2018 but, because of public health concerns caused by the covid-19 pandemic, the submarine’s commissioning ceremony, scheduled for early 2020, had to be postponed. The ceremony is now going ahead on Saturday April 2nd, 2022, in the presence of her sponsor, First Lady of the United States, Dr. Jill Biden.

Joe Cruise expressed how  great a honor it is for the Port of Wilmington to receive the USS DELAWARE and host the Commissioning Commemoration Ceremony in a warm welcome speech.

Since their arrival the submarine, its captain and crew have been involved in the preparations for the ceremony. However, they have also made time to be gracious hosts to numerous groups from in and around the Wilmington area by taking them on tours of the vessel.

Several GT USA Wilmington employees were lucky enough to be given a tour of the inside of the submarine. At the end of the tour Joe Cruise presented Commander Horton with a plaque to mark the maiden call of the USS DELAWARE to the Port of Wilmington.

The tour itself was conducted by the Weapons Officer who guided the group through the submarine, including the torpedo room, the state-of-the-art bridge, engine room, mess hall and crew quarters.

Joe Cruise expressed joy at the amazing experience they had being privileged to be able to have the USS DELAWARE and her crew at the Port of Wilmington on course of the week..

Michael Hall, Chief Operations Officer of GT USA Wilmington commented on how remarkable remarkable the boat is, the level of technology on board and also the skillset of the crew that operates it as extremely impressive.

The Port of Wilmington is one of the United States’ primary gateways for fresh fruits. Its 2021-2022 winter fruit season is in the final and imports are regularly inbound from Morocco and Chile.

The Port of Wilmington has worked hard to put itself in a good position to take advantage of new business from all over the world due to the supply chain crisis. The work has been rewarded with an increase in throughput of cargoes such as juices, rice, lumber and plywood. The Port’s berths and terminal remain uncongested, unlike many ports along the east and west coasts.
