May 2023 Sees $888M Surge in U.S. Import of Curtains and Linen

U.S. Curtain And Linen Imports

In May 2023, purchases abroad of curtains and linen increased by 8.3% to 174K tons, rising for the second month in a row after eight months of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a perceptible decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in April 2023 with an increase of 17% m-o-m.

In value terms, curtain and linen imports rose notably to $888M (IndexBox estimates) in May 2023. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced curtailment.

Imports by Country

In May 2023, China (113K tons) constituted the largest supplier of curtain and linen to the United States, with a 65% share of total imports. Moreover, curtain and linen imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Pakistan (28K tons), fourfold.

From May 2022 to May 2023, the average monthly growth rate of volume from China amounted to -1.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Pakistan (-3.3% per month) and India (-2.4% per month).

In value terms, China ($465M) constituted the largest supplier of curtain and linen to the United States, comprising 52% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by India ($222M), with a 25% share of total imports.

From May 2022 to May 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value from China totaled -2.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: India (-2.5% per month) and Pakistan (-4.4% per month).

Import Prices by Country

In May 2023, the curtain and linen price amounted to $5,112 per ton (CIF, US), surging by 2.6% against the previous month. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The import price peaked at $5,676 per ton in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to May 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was India ($9,024 per ton), while the price for Pakistan ($3,802 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From May 2022 to May 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (-0.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.

In April 2023, approximately 92K tons of chocolate and confectionery were imported into the United States; dropping by -6.3% against the month before. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2023 when imports increased by 21% month-to-month.

In value terms, chocolate and confectionery imports contracted to $430M (IndexBox estimates) in April 2023. The total import value increased at an average monthly rate of +1.1% over the period from April 2022 to April 2023; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2023 when imports increased by 23% against the previous month.

Imports by Country

In April 2023, Canada (32K tons) constituted the largest chocolate and confectionery supplier to the United States, with a 35% share of total imports. Moreover, chocolate and confectionery imports from Canada exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Mexico (13K tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Cote d’Ivoire (8.9K tons), with a 9.7% share.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the average monthly growth rate of volume from Canada was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Mexico (-2.7% per month) and Cote d’Ivoire (+2.8% per month).

In value terms, Canada ($160M) constituted the largest supplier of chocolate and confectionery to the United States, comprising 37% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mexico ($52M), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Cote d’Ivoire, with a 7.1% share.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the average monthly growth rate of value from Canada was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Mexico (+0.7% per month) and Cote d’Ivoire (+2.8% per month).

Import Prices by Country

In April 2023, the chocolate and confectionery price amounted to $4,698 per ton (CIF, US), standing approximately at the previous month. Over the period from April 2022 to April 2023, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in September 2022 when the average import price increased by 6.4% month-to-month. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $4,796 per ton. From October 2022 to April 2023, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Germany ($6,366 per ton), while the price for Cote d’Ivoire ($3,436 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+3.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a mild reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in June 2022 when imports increased by 31% month-to-month. As a result, imports reached the peak of 10M units. From July 2022 to April 2023, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, spectacle frame imports contracted to $94M (IndexBox estimates) in April 2023. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2023 when imports increased by 20% m-o-m. Imports peaked at 115M units in October 2022; however, from November 2022 to April 2023, imports failed to regain momentum.

 

Imports by Country

In April 2023, China (5.5M units) constituted the largest spectacle frame supplier to the United States, with a 77% share of total imports. Moreover, spectacle frame imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Italy (665K units), eightfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Taiwan (Chinese) (203K units), with a 2.9% share.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the average monthly growth rate of volume from China totaled -1.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Italy (-0.1% per month) and Taiwan (Chinese) (-4.3% per month).

In value terms, China ($41M), Italy ($34M) and Japan ($4.6M) appeared to be the largest spectacle frame suppliers to the United States, with a combined 84% share of total imports.

Among the main suppliers, Italy, with a CAGR of +0.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.

Imports by Type

Plastic frames and mountings for spectacles and goggles (4.5M units) and non-plastic frames and mountings for spectacles and goggles (2.6M units) were the main products of spectacle frame imports to the United States.

As a result, import price reached the peak level of $15,622 per thousand units, and then fell sharply in the following month.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Italy ($51.8 per unit), while the price for Taiwan (Chinese) ($3.4 per unit) was amongst the lowest.

Based on April 2023 figures, imports increased by +58.1% against February 2023 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2022 with an increase of 68% against the previous month. As a result, imports reached the peak of 1.9M units. From June 2022 to April 2023, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, smoothing iron imports skyrocketed to $12M (IndexBox estimates) in April 2023. Overall, total imports indicated slight growth from April 2022 to April 2023: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +1.2% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on April 2023 figures, imports increased by +39.7% against February 2023 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2022 when imports increased by 81% m-o-m.

Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at 19M units in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to April 2023, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In April 2023, China (1.3M units) was the main smoothing iron supplier to the United States, with a approximately 97% share of total imports.

In value terms, video projector imports soared to $101M (IndexBox estimates) in March 2023. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a pronounced expansion from March 2022 to March 2023: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +3.4% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on March 2023 figures, imports increased by +30.9% against February 2023 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in July 2022 with an increase of 43% month-to-month. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at 121M units in September 2022; however, from October 2022 to March 2023, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

China (55K units), the Philippines (42K units) and Vietnam (1.7K units) were the main suppliers of video projector imports to the United States, with a combined 96% share of total imports.

From March 2022 to March 2023, the biggest increases were in the Philippines (with a CAGR of +4.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.

In value terms, the Philippines ($39M), China ($32M) and Vietnam ($4.8M) appeared to be the largest video projector suppliers to the United States, with a combined 75% share of total imports.

In terms of the main suppliers, the Philippines, with a CAGR of +10.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on February 2023 figures, passenger car import price decreased by -3.1% against December 2022 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 when the average import price increased by 31% month-to-month. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $37.5M per thousand units. From April 2022 to February 2023, the average import prices failed to regain momentum. \

United Kingdom Passenger Car Imports

In February 2023, overseas purchases of passenger cars increased by 28% to 129K units for the first time since November 2022, thus ending a two-month declining trend. In general, imports, however, saw a pronounced setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in November 2022 when imports increased by 66% m-o-m. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at 174K units in February 2022; however, from March 2022 to February 2023, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, passenger car imports surged to $4.7B (IndexBox estimates) in February 2023. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in November 2022 with an increase of 52% against the previous month. Imports peaked at 5.3B units in March 2022; however, from April 2022 to February 2023, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

United Kingdom Passenger Car Imports by Country

China (24K units), Spain (21K units) and the Czech Republic (12K units) were the main suppliers of passenger car imports to the UK, together accounting for 45% of total imports.

From February 2022 to February 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by China (with a CAGR of +11.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest passenger car suppliers to the UK were China ($596M), Spain ($450M) and Slovakia ($366M), with a combined 30% share of total imports. These countries were followed by the Czech Republic, South Korea, Japan, Hungary, Belgium, Romania, Turkey, Mexico, the United States and Portugal, which together accounted for a further 31%.

Among the main suppliers, Mexico, with a CAGR of +5.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

U.S. Prisms And Mirrors Exports

For the third month in a row, the United States recorded growth in overseas shipments of prisms and mirrors, which increased by 31% to 338 tons in March 2023. Over the period under review, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in October 2022 when exports increased by 42% month-to-month. The exports peaked in March 2023.

In value terms, prisms and mirrors exports soared to $109M (IndexBox estimates) in March 2023. In general, exports, however, saw a noticeable downturn.

Exports by Country

South Korea (149 tons) was the main destination for prisms and mirrors exports from the United States, accounting for a 44% share of total exports. Moreover, prisms and mirrors exports to South Korea exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, China (64 tons), twofold. Taiwan (Chinese) (28 tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 8.3% share.

From March 2022 to March 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume to South Korea totaled +3.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: China (-3.0% per month) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+0.9% per month).

In value terms, China ($16M), South Korea ($15M) and Japan ($10M) were the largest markets for prisms and mirrors exported from the United States worldwide, together comprising 37% of total exports. These countries were followed by Taiwan (Chinese), the UK, Mexico and India, which together accounted for a further 13%.

Taiwan (Chinese), with a CAGR of -0.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.

Export Prices by Country

In March 2023, the prisms and mirrors price amounted to $322K per ton (FOB, US), approximately reflecting the previous month. In general, the export price, however, saw a pronounced setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in December 2022 when the average export price increased by 97% against the previous month. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $621K per ton. From January 2023 to March 2023, the the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In March 2023, the country with the highest price was Japan ($1.3M per ton), while the average price for exports to India ($42,854 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From March 2022 to March 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Japan (+0.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a noticeable setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in May 2022 when imports increased by 15% month-to-month.

In value terms, frozen fish imports expanded significantly to $476M (IndexBox estimates) in March 2023. Overall, imports, however, saw a slight descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2022 with an increase of 12% month-to-month.

Imports by Country

China (14K tons), Vietnam (7.4K tons) and Chile (6.7K tons) were the main suppliers of frozen fish imports to the United States, together accounting for 50% of total imports. These countries were followed by Indonesia, Norway, Mexico, Peru, Iceland, Canada, Taiwan (Chinese), Ecuador, Japan and Brazil, which together accounted for a further 36%.

From March 2022 to March 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Mexico (with a CAGR of +4.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest frozen fish suppliers to the United States were Chile ($91M), China ($71M) and Norway ($49M), with a combined 44% share of total imports.

Chile, with a CAGR of +2.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports by Type

In March 2023, frozen fish fillet (41K tons) constituted the largest type of frozen fish supplied to the United States, with a 72% share of total imports. Moreover, frozen fish fillet exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, frozen whole fish (15K tons), threefold.

From March 2022 to March 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of import of frozen fish fillet amounted to -2.2%. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: frozen whole fish (-2.8% per month) and frozen fish meat (-5.2% per month).

In value terms, frozen fish fillet ($392M) constituted the largest type of frozen fish supplied to the United States, comprising 82% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by frozen whole fish ($77M), with a 16% share of total imports.

In value terms, Mexico ($706M) constituted the largest supplier of television receiver to the United States, comprising 78% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($86M), with a 9.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Vietnam, with an 8.1% share.

From March 2022 to March 2023, the average monthly growth rate of value from Mexico amounted to -2.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: China (-2.8% per month) and Vietnam (-0.9% per month).
