Jettainer Acknowledged as "Best Service Provider"

A Certificate of Appreciation was presented to outsourced ULD management partner, Jettainer, during this year’s Oman Air Cargo Awards ceremony. The annual event, which took place on January 23,  honored its partners that supported efforts for company growth.
“We are on the path of achieving the goals set by our Group Company in line with the 2040 vision for Oman, in which the logistics industry has become an integral element of Oman’s future development plans. 2018 has been a successful year for Oman Air Cargo with a year on year growth in terms of revenue,” said Mohammed Al Musafir, Senior Vice President, Oman Air Cargo.
Jettainer’s “Best Service Provider” award directly acknowledged its efforts to reduce the existing fleet of Oman Air Cargo in October 2017 which resulted in an overall reduction of CO² emissions.
“The award for Oman Air Cargo is something very special for two reasons. Firstly, because the customers are the ones who are best placed to evaluate our service and the honors they bestow on us. Secondly, because we have only been working for Oman Air Cargo since the end of 2017 and our ULD management has been convincing right from the start,” comments Carsten Hernig, Managing Director of Jettainer GmbH.

Dubai Customs Boasts Exemplary Customs Strategies

Many might recall the June 2018 Air Cargo Advance Screening Program mandating foreign shipments to be subject to providing a laundry list of pre-arrival cargo data when the U.S. is the final destination, per measures from the Department of Homeland Security. Strict screenings such as these have been implemented globally, as recently reported for Dubai Customs, which prides itself on significant progress in performance due to the advanced infrastructure as well as supportive government policies assisting in facilitating global trade efforts. The success is also paired with a proactive approach involving careful evaluation and research of trade trends.
Director of Dubai Customs, Ahmed Mahboob Musabih, explains: “We have an integrated strategy in place to develop the external trade performance further following the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, vice president, prime minister and ruler of Dubai, and along with the guidelines of Dubai Plan 2021 and the UAE Centennial 2071. We are watching closely the changes taking place in the international trade and we will turn challenges into opportunities by entering new markets and expanding our existing ones.”
More recently, however, Dubai Customs reported several cases where significant smuggling attempts were stopped because of the diligence and seamless communication strategies in place. One report identified 922 successfully prevented smuggling attempts, of which 38.5 percent were drug contrabands. Even more interesting is the time frame the attempts occurred: between January and September of 2018.
“Thanks to our inspectors’ vigilance, we are closely in full control of all checkpoints,” explains Ibrahim Al Kamali, Dubai Customs’ director of Passenger Operations. “Our inspection officers receive the best training on body language and different types of drugs, and how to distinguish fake brands from genuine ones.”
“There are challenges facing customs authorities in countries that have strategic locations,” Musabih points out. “Dubai is not an exception. It’s strategically located between East and West, and it has spent billions of dirhams to develop its infrastructure, ports and airports.”
“The Emirate has also provided an unprecedented host of services and products, including the iDeclare application which significantly reduces passengers’ time needed to declare different belongings. These advanced services will facilitate passengers’ entry into the country.”
From security and trust to reliability and competition, sourcing the best carrier and airport connection needs to align with customer needs, the types of products being transported, and compliance efforts for the region. Just because an airline is associated with a big brand does not guarantee a seamless transport of goods.
Conduct necessary research and review updated reports to learn and identify an airline’s strengths and areas of improvement. No two carriers are the same, and the options available depend on the amount of knowledge you have going in and what fits your long-term and short-term needs. Consider the partnerships involved with the airline of your choice and how these partnerships create competitive advantage. If you can’t identify what makes a carrier or airline significant, it might be time to reconsider market options.

Port of Seattle Aims to Heat Sea-Tac Airport Entirely with RNG

The Port of Seattle is pushing to make Seattle-Tacoma International Airport the nation’s first airport heated entirely by renewable natural gas. The port recently announced a Request for Proposals for RNG service to supply Sea-Tac’s boilers and bus fueling system, which is responsible for more than 80 percent of the port-owned emissions.
All of the current fossil natural gas would be replaced by RNG, which is also known as biomethane and is produced by the decomposition of organic matter, typically produced by landfills, wastewater treatment plants and food and animal waste digesters.
“The port can play a major role in creating a renewable natural gas market because we offer a stable, long-term use of gas,” says Arlyn Purcell, the port’s director of Aviation Environment and Sustainability. “If we can attract a project developer to supply the airport, this will spur more opportunities to feed the current gas pipeline with RNG rather than have landfills or digesters flare the gas on-site or allowing their methane emissions to escape into the air.”
The port previously adopted aggressive greenhouse gas reduction goals under its Century Agenda, with the aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from its own operations by 50 percent from 2005 levels by 2030, and to be carbon neutral or carbon negative by 2050. Ranked as the ninth busiest U.S. airport, Sea-Tac International served 46.9 million passengers and more than 425,800 metric tons of air cargo in 2017, producing a regional economic impact pegged at more than $22.5 billion.

American Airlines Cargo to Utilize New Service Between DFW and Dublin

Starting this summer, American Airlines will offer a new nonstop flight from Dublin to Dallas Fort Worth, directly connecting the two for the first time in the history of the world’s largest carrier.
The seasonal flight, which will operate from June 7 through Sept. 28 of this year, will be flown on cargo-friendly, fuel-efficient Boeing 787-9 aircraft. That should make it a welcome addition for the cargo community wishing to serve Texas, the second largest importing state in America, where the manufacturing sector is projected to continue growing in the coming years.
Customers with a diverse range of commodities are already expressing interest in the flight, according to American Airlines, which adds potential commodities including computer parts, medical devices, machinery, oil industry equipment, aviation parts and pharmaceuticals.
“This first, direct, scheduled service from Ireland to Texas will open up a number of new markets for both Irish and multinational exporters with freight destined for Dallas and beyond,” says Andy Cornwell, regional manager of AA Cargo-Northern Europe.
American also offers flights from Dublin to Charlotte, Chicago O’Hare and Philadelphia, as well as seasonal service from Shannon to Philly.

Descartes Air Cargo Advance Screening Solutions Provides Compliance Technology

Nippon Cargo Airlines confirmed this week the implementation of the Descartes Air Cargo Advance Screening Program to support efforts towards compliance for air cargo imports to the U.S. The announcement confirmed with the mandatory advanced security filings taking place, the company will rely heavily on the required ACAS to meet compliance requirements.

“Compliance with regulations, such as ACAS, is essential to ensuring safe and secure operations for our customers and NCA,” said Keita Sataka, Senior Vice President at NCA. “Descartes has a strong history of providing NCA and the air cargo industry with customs and security filing technology, and their ACAS solution provides a proven, reliable, cost effective way to meet data collection and submission requirements.”

The functionality of the ACAS requires pre-loading data to be submitted, following mandatory data requirements for air forwarders and carriers. The Descartes Global Logistics Network streamlines  the validation process by managing the flow of master and house bill information with automation.

“We’re pleased to help NCA comply with ACAS requirements,” said Scott Sangster, VP Global Logistics Network at Descartes. “Air cargo transportation is a vital part of the growing international logistics market, and Descartes’ solutions help carriers, like NCA, and other stakeholders in the air cargo community accelerate the movement of freight while meeting important security initiatives worldwide.”

Year-On-Year Air Cargo Growth Reported for Budapest Airport

Budapest Airport reported record-breaking cargo numbers exceeding its substantial 2017 record numbers and confirming consistent double-digit growth for the last three years, according to a release this week.

“These latest figures are exciting as they represent three years of uninterrupted double-digit growth at the airport,” said René Droese, Director Property and Cargo of Budapest Airport. “We are focusing all our efforts to make good use of the ideal conditions in Budapest and turn Liszt Ferenc International Airport into a major cargo logistics hub for the Central-Eastern European region.”

She added:

“For this, we are establishing appropriate technical, security, and traffic conditions – the relevant projects entered the phase of implementation last year, and we can successfully complete them this year. As a first step we handed over a 16,000 m2 new cargo warehouse and office capacity for our integrator partners in 2017; their traffic has been constantly developing for years.”

Budapest Airport will continue to leverage its cargo success through implementing simultaneous operations of two Boeing B-747-8F freighters.

“The combined value of this development effort in 2019 reaches EUR46 million, and is financed by Budapest Airport itself,” said Droese. “Our goal is to deliver, by the end of this year, an ideal cargo infrastructure for all segments of our well-balanced customer portfolio, for full freighters, belly cargo, integrators and roader feeder trucking too. Rising demand is illustrated by the fact that last year a number of wide body and jumbo freighters were being loaded at the airport each day, including Boeing B-747s operated by Cargolux, AirBridgeCargo, and Silk Way West, and Airbus A300s, A310s, A330s, used by Turkish Cargo and Qatar Airways Cargo.”

H5 CMS to Support LuxairCARGO’s One Million Tonnes of Airfreight Cargo

Phase one of the newly upgraded Hermes 5 (H5) Cargo Management System (CMS), following the anticipated mid-2019 completion of the the updated version specifically customized for LuxairCARGO at Luxembourg Airport, has been completed. The upgrade will support one of the world’s largest ground handlers while improving operational efficiencies through the platform’s streamlined management application.

“For one inbound flight to Luxembourg Airport, there can be as many as 20 different trucks which transport its payload onto the next leg of its journey,” said Laurent Jossart, Executive Vice-President, LuxairCARGO. “This tailored version of H5 will help LuxairCARGO to handle one million tonnes of airfreight cargo a year and save significantly on time and costs.”

Features of the CMS provide Customs document consolidation as well as increased processing efficiencies for administrative and cargo operations. Additionally, real-time tracking, data analysis, and a new Customs interface will support efforts towards streamlining operations and reducing delays.

“Hermes 5 not only provides the level of automation we require, but also guarantees the possibility to interface with all our other existing operational systems. Hermes has also allowed us to enhance our quality and has contributed to a standardization of our processes,” said Jossart. “During the implementation, the Hermes Logistics Technologies (HLT) team of cargo and technical experts provided on-site support to LuxairCARGO, which meant the system went live successfully and in very good timing.”

Hactl Hosts 12th Annual International Forklift and Pallet Building Competition

This year’s 12th annual Hactl-hosted International Forklift and Pallet Building Competition comprised of nine teams who traveled internationally to compete at Hactl’s SuperTerminal 1 facility in Hong Kong.

All nine teams were judged based on ability and compliance with ICAO and IATA international standards relating to dangerous goods, heavy cargo and overall build integrity. The timed tasks included maneuvering a loaded forklift truck through a simulated warehouse course and delivering cargo to team members who then had to load as many items as possible.

“Mixing machinery and people in a time-constrained environment like air cargo handling always introduces risk,” said Hactl Chief Executive Wilson Kwong. “Hactl’s annual competition puts a light-hearted, friendly and competitive face on a serious message: that safety in the air cargo workplace is paramount. Honing forklift driving skills is a key aspect of this, and was clearly evidenced by the excellent performance of the competitors this year.”

The nine teams that participated were: Air Canada Cargo, Air France Cargo, IAG Cargo, Air China Cargo, Cargolux, Japan Airlines, KLM, Nippon Cargo Airlines and Qatar Airways.

Air China Cargo took first place with  Air France Cargo taking second place and Qatar Airways finishing in third.

“In line with Hactl’s long-standing policy of industry leadership and best practice, we are committed to protecting our own workers, and hope that our competition will once again help to focus industry attention on this vitally important topic,” concluded Kwong.
