It is said that the three most important factors in determining the desirability of a property are location, location, location and the same rule applies to setting up a successful business.

Sungard Availability Services took a look at the best UK cities for companies, analyzing and ranking metrics such as start-up survival rate, average office price, and graduate population. These factors determine how each location will affect businesses in terms of talent acquisition, local resources, and economic outlay, any of which could ultimately make the difference between success and failure.

Cambridge ranked first overall in the Sungard survey. Cambridge boasts a 65.2-percent start-up survival rate, placing it second in that category. The city is well-known for its academic excellence, which provides a steady stream of talented employees, but its transportation links and business support programs are also huge assets, according to Sungard. Local start-up success stories include Crowdsurfer and Darktrace and the city is also home to several thriving business hubs, such as the Cambridge Cluster and Cambridge Business Park.

Cambridge boasts a high employment rate of 77.6 percent. Many top businesses have located here to take advantage of its graduate population, which in turn attracts more talented individuals and pushes the employment rate up further still. Some of the area’s top employers include Microsoft Research, ARM, and Marshall Aerospace.

At just 20Mbps, Cambridge’s average download speed is ranked eighth. Local initiatives have sought to increase the uptake of superfast fiber broadband in the city. The sheer number of technology firms in the area, ranging from start-ups to multi-nationals, also suggests that its network infrastructure is not a major concern.

Cambridge is ranked eighth amongst the selected cities for crime rate, with just over 340 crimes committed per 1,000 residents. Victim-based crime has fallen in the Cambridge area over the last five years, however, and a recent change of leadership in the police force suggests that the city is committed to reducing its crime figures. In early April 2016, police began a crackdown on rural crimes.

The other UK cities that landed in Sungard’s top ten were Oxford, Brighton, London, Edinburgh, Bristol, York, Northampton, Leeds, and Sheffield.
