Wärtsilä, a manufacturer of maritime power sources based in Finland, recently tested its system for the remote control of vessels. Controllers in San Diego steered a ship off the coast of Aberdeen, Scotland. The system used attributes of autonomous, onboard navigation as well as remote, joystick steering. Wärtsilä personnel report the effects were equivalent to onboard navigation.
