New Shipping Service to Link Saudi Arabia to Indian Subcontinent

The Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani) has announced the addition of King Abdulaziz Port to the IMX service run by a maritime consortium that includes Qatar-based shipping and logistics conglomerate Milaha, vessel operator X-Press Feeders, and short-sea carrier Unifeeder. 

The newly-introduced service at the Dammam based hub is set to broaden the Kingdom’s scope of trade as well as its maritime connectivity with the rest of the world, which represents a key objective of the National Transport and Logistics Strategy (NTLS).

Besides King Abdulaziz Port, the IMX route will also call at the ports of Jebel Ali, Khalifa, Nhava Sheva, Hazira, Mundra, and Hamad onboard three vessels holding a capacity of 3,500 TEUs each.

 

A total of five shipping services were added to the trade hubs of Jeddah, Jubail, and Dammam over the span of January this year, thereby opening new trade avenues between the Kingdom and 43 global ports.

Ras Al-Khair Port’s December Volumes Hit a New Record

Ras Al-Khair Port has posted its highest monthly throughput ever by handling around 1,060,835 tons last December in a reflection of its unparalleled operational efficiency and reliability.

The historic performance marks a new chapter in the industrial port’s journey as a leading maritime gateway for mining imports and exports while serving the overall objectives of the Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani) in building a world-class trade infrastructure in the Kingdom as envisioned by the National Transport and Logistics Strategy (NTLS).   

Last month saw the Arabian Gulf port receive a total of 43 ships loaded with mineral bulk cargo ranging between 303,458 tons of ammonia, 59,983 tons of soda, and 54,543 tons of sulfuric acid. On the other hand, its annual cargo volume amounted to a record 8,691,506 tons, up 24% year-on-year from 6,984,010 tons.

Record books were rewritten several times in the past year by Ras Al-Khair Port, including the highest daily throughput at 91,386 tons as well as the maximum freight handled by a berth in a day at 22,707 tons besides servicing 47 marine vessels in December.

The state-of-the-art port began operations in 2016 to cater to over 100 diverse industrial projects in the city of Ras Al-Khair, the Kingdom’s new mining hub. Built over 23 sq. km., the port features 14 modern berths and a vast fleet of advanced equipment that can handle up to 35 million tons of cargo yearly.

Jeddah Islamic Port Receives 3 Modern STS Cranes

The Red Sea Gateway Terminal (RSGT), a strategic partner of Jeddah Islamic Port and the operator of its North Container Terminal, has procured three cutting-edge Ship-to-Shore (STS) cranes in its pursuit to supercharge operational efficiency at the world-class hub.

While this addition falls under the wider ambitions of the Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani) to transform the country’s maritime sector into a global logistics powerhouse that boasts high productivity and boosts international trade in tandem with the vision set forth by the National Transport and Logistics Strategy (NTLS).

The North Container Terminal is now home to 24 state-of-the-art cranes with the addition of the latest batch of heavy-duty equipment, thus fulfilling a critical component in the 6-billion-riyal concession agreement between the terminal operator and the national maritime regulator that seeks to upgrade the installed capacity of the facility to 8.8 million TEUs.

The deployment of modern cranes demonstrates RSGT’s long-standing commitment to upscale the terminal’s operations and modernize its logistics infrastructure besides upskilling its workforce in support of the Kingdom’s growing influence in the global logistics landscape.

Featuring 62 berths, four terminals, and an annual throughput of 130 million tons, the 12.5 sq. km. port is the Kingdom’s busiest and the Red Sea’s leading hub for maritime trade, transshipments, and re-exports, with an eye on occupying a top-ten spot among the world’s best by 2030.
