Intradco Global and Chapman Freeborn Collaborate to Transport 18 Giraffes from South Africa to Brazil

Intradco Global and parent company, Chapman Freeborn, have worked together on a charter flight to transport 18 giraffes from O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB) to Río de Janeiro Galeão Airport (GIG).

Averaging 4.3-5.7 meters when fully grown, the animals were transported whilst still young to ensure they had the legally required head clearance in the 2.95 meter-high crates, which were made of metal and plywood to make them both sturdy and leak-proof.

When animals are transported by air, it is of utmost importance that their safety and happiness are at the forefront of the operation. As such, Intradco Global and Chapman Freeborn ensured the giraffes’ speedy loading to reduce the time spent on the ground at the airport. Two attendants traveled with them during their 10-hour direct flight, one of whom was a breeder who has known the giraffes their whole lives, continually monitoring their well-being and providing them with fresh food and water as required.

After arriving in Rio de Janeiro, cranes were used to efficiently offload the 6 crates, each containing 3 giraffes, from the 747F aircraft. The animals then entered a mandatory 30-day quarantine, which they will finish on 11th December to then be transported to their new home.

Alexander Kraynov from Intradco Global said, “This charter was in collaboration with the Chapman Freeborn South Africa team. Cargo Charter Manager, Gerhard Coetzee, was on the ground in Johannesburg communicating with the handling company and customs agents, and ensuring the loading went quickly and smoothly. Together we completed a successful operation that saw 18 exotic animals travel over 7,000 in safety and comfort.”

Intradco Global is the world’s leading equine, livestock and exotics transportation air charter specialist, with over 30 years of experience in providing the safest air charter logistics for animals of all shapes and sizes. Chapman Freeborn Transports Six McDermott Aviation Bell 214B Helicopters from Greece to Australia on Volga-Dnepr’s AN124 Aircraft

Chapman Freeborn and Volga-Dnepr Airlines have successfully collaborated with McDermott Aviation to demobilize helicopters from Greece. This most recent operation involved the repatriation of 6 McDermott Aviation Bell 214B helicopters to Australia on an AN124 aircraft.

The helicopters, totaling 35 tonnes, were flown individually into Athens Airport (ATH) by a single pilot who landed them on the tarmac prior to them being dismantled airside and exported as IATA-compliant air cargo. Usually, exports would take place within a cargo terminal, however, the Bell 214Bs’ exceptional versatility enables a level of mobility that is invaluable when dealing with complex load planning, airport coordination and constraints pertaining to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Loading onto the AN124 was executed with the help of Volga-Dnepr’s internal cranes, external equipment and the highly-specialized expertise of Volga-Dnepr and McDermott Aviation crew.

It is a rare occurrence and colossal achievement for 6 helicopters to be transported in one aircraft simultaneously, and the success of this charter required all parties involved to embrace this challenging and dynamic situation. The Chapman Freeborn team worked closely with experts including McDermott’s helicopter engineers, Volga-Dnepr’s loadmaster and other crew from both organizations comprising of 24 people in total, to seamlessly coordinate the operation.

The team also navigated complexities presented by COVID-19 to ensure PCR tests, vaccinations and COVID-safe procedures were all prioritized.

Thanks to the hard work and dedication of everyone involved, this important and rare charter meant that the 6 helicopters arrived punctually at Perth Airport (PER).

Michael Amson, Cargo & Passenger Charter Manager at Chapman Freeborn, said, “Without the support and cooperation of all parties involved in this extraordinary charter, it would not have been the success that it was. We would like to thank Volga-Dnepr Airlines, McDermott Aviation, DNATA, Cargo Connect, and Signature Flight Support for their combined efforts, which ultimately enabled the client to continue their vital work in the emergency services sector without interruption.”

Ekaterina Andreeva, Commercial Director, Volga-Dnepr Airlines, highlights: “Some people might say – it is impossible to transport six helicopters aboard one plane, but here is what distinguishes air cargo specialists – we make impossible possible by bringing together the right people at the right time armed with competences, experience and equipment. We would like to thank everyone involved in this mega-project which will go down into the history of our life-saving logistics operations”.

Chapman Freeborn Charter Over 20 Flights Carrying COVID-19 Test from China to Austria

Over the past few months, Chapman Freeborn has worked with their client in Austria, Gebrüder Weiss, to transport COVID-19 test kits on over 20 charter flights.

A variety of aircraft have been used for the different transports, but a journey last week saw 110,820kg of test kits (equal to 804 CBM) traveling on an AN225, the largest aircraft in the world.

The journey started at Tianjin Binhai International Airport (TSN) where the test kits were loaded, and then onto two stopovers at Almaty International Airport (ALA) in Kazakhstan and Istanbul Airport (IST) before reaching their final destination of Linz Airport (LNZ).

The Chapman Freeborn team utilized their close network within China to ensure the handling at TSN went to plan, working with the Austrian Embassy in China to ensure the test kits would arrive in Linz on time.

Tim Fernholz, Cargo Charter Broker at Chapman Freeborn Germany, explained, “Linz Airport is perfect for the AN225 as it has an extra-wide runway measuring 60m, due to its former usage as a military airport. This was just the second time that the AN225 has landed here – the last was 18 years ago”.

After their timely arrival in Linz, the test kits were distributed to pharmacies all across Austria by Gebrüder Weiss, who is the oldest transport and logistics company in the world.

Gebrüder Weiss said, “After initially working with Chapman Freeborn on this task and noticing how successful every charter was, we decided to work with them on an ongoing basis to distribute test kits across the country. They work with us closely, but also with all their contacts, meaning we can trust them to find solutions that ensure all our flights are just as successful as the last. There have been around 20 so far with more to come – this week more kits were transported on a B747F. We would not hesitate to recommend Chapman Freeborn.”
