Spot Pricing Will Dominate Air Cargo Bookings As Digitization Continues To Drive Market Change

Awery Aviation Software (Awery) CEO Vitaly Smilianets told delegates  the CNS Partnership Conference 2022 that fixed rate booking would not make a comeback in the short term

Fundamental change in the air cargo booking process accelerated by COVID is here to stay due to the uptake of digitization Awery’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Vitaly Smilianets told delegates at the CNS Partnership Conference 2022 in Phoenix, Arizona, USA.

“A side effect of the COVID pandemic was a fundamental shift away from long term contracted rates over to spot booking as capacity shrunk and demand increased,” said Smilianets.

“At the same time, the uptake of digitization by airlines introduced huge efficiencies making pricing quicker and more responsive.

“Because of this, we anticipate that even as air cargo capacity increases, either through increased passenger flights or investment in freighters, the airlines won’t return to fixed rates.”

Awery’s suite of services includes CargoBooking, which automates booking processes and provides instant quotes.

It converts inbound email quotation requests into instant quotes and its Quotation Management System delivers published rates, contract rates and allocations, as well as spot or promo rates.

“The change began because of COVID, but the change is here to stay because of tech,” said Smilianets.

“The airlines have done a fantastic job in adapting to new processes, embracing digitization to adapt to the changing business landscape.

“By adopting digitization, the industry is building business resilience and future proofing against the next challenge.”

Smilianets was speaking at the CNS Partnership Conference 2022, attended by a record-breaking 750 delegates from across the globe.

Wiremind Cargo unveils its CargoStack CMS

Leading French technology specialist, Wiremind Cargo has launched CargoStack – a comprehensive SaaS Cargo Management System (CMS) suite enabling enhanced air cargo activity steering through AI-driven insights

CargoStack is Wiremind Cargo’s first holistic product suite designed to ensure seamless interaction between airlines, GHAs, GSAs, and forwarders. Built around a SaaS core system, airlines can use the CMS to manage their entire cargo activity from schedule to live capacity and bookings, from products and customer management, to flight optimization and loading. Since all data points within CargoStack, such as rates or capacity information, are linked to respective APIs, its strategic modules can easily be integrated into the IT landscapes of the airline, whether to its own systems or those of its forwarding customers, as well as its GSA and GHA partners.

“Connectivity is the future, and we want our customers to be able to concentrate fully on their sales and operational activities, benefitting from highly innovative system support. Gone are the days where IT often posed a hindrance to work processes. Our technology offers data and insights that enable improved decision making and far more efficient workflows. Seamless integration and ultimate user experience is our aim,” Nathanaël de Tarade, Chief Executive Officer of Wiremind Cargo, explains. “When it comes to setting up CargoStack, the airline simply tells us who CargoStack should be plugged with, and we make it happen.”

The entire system architecture has been designed to enhance the airline’s competitive advantage, and three core features differentiate CargoStack from other CMS solutions on the market. First and foremost, is its excellent user experience. CargoStack’s unique look and feel is a key factor in its fast and easy adoption.

Secondly, CargoStack includes Wiremind Cargo’s flagship capacity optimization module, SkyPallet – a revolution in shipment steering and flight planning, given that it enables flight optimization throughout all stages of the flight. SkyPallet leads to improved quoting, booking acceptance, flight management, and ULD build-up plans, and is used by leading international airlines.

Thirdly, CargoStack’s Revenue Management capabilities, programmed by an industry-recognised data science team, and capable of managing well in excess of 150 million bookings per year. Thanks to proven technical expertise in AI and forecasting abilities, CargoStack offers unparalleled revenue optimization features such as Dynamic Pricing and Overbooking Forecasting. “With CargoStack, as with all Wiremind Cargo products, our customers are purchasing perfection in evolution. We offer a fully functional CMS that benefits from the periodic release of new features as we continue to further enhance and fine-tune functionalities,” de Tarade states.

Since CargoStack is a software as a service (SaaS) product, customers benefit from competitive and highly cost-effective solutions when it comes to maintenance and implementation, as well as a product that is easily able to keep pace with the dynamic changes within the air cargo industry.

About Wiremind Cargo

Launched in 2022, Wiremind Cargo is the cargo arm of the Wiremind Group, founded in 2014. The Airforwarders Association is Taking a Leading Role

Freight is piling up. Back in February 2022, the COVID-19 omicron variant was sidelining employees in all sectors. Air cargo shippers were no exception, and the bottlenecks produced a downstream effect that is still being felt today.

While the freight pile-up has eased just slightly, the same cannot be said for Shanghai. With one of the largest manufacturing centers in all of China, the country’s “zero-COVID” strategy has resulted in lockdowns that are impacting the entire export (and import) sectors. A mind-boggling 9 out of 10 trucks are sidelined and up to 50% of air traffic has been diverted. While this has yet to be fully felt Stateside, a tsunami of deferred cargo is coming and the impact could be quite severe.

All of this has pushed industry players into intense preparation and strategy phases. One such association is the Airforwarders Association (AfA). Known within the industry as the travel agents for freight shipments, AfA represents 200 + member companies that move cargo throughout the supply chain. Members are as small as family businesses with 20 or fewer employees to 1,000 + companies. AfA is rightly concerned about the present state of affairs and with the objective of minimizing the pending impact, members of AfA’s Airport Congestion Committee (ACC) have agreed to work on five critical issues:

  • Technology and Automation
  • Service Standards
  • Airport Facilities and Infrastructure
  • Staffing and Hours of Operation
  • Regulatory and Paperwork Challenges

The above five were identified via a comprehensive survey of airport cargo stakeholders. The AfA collaborated with the National Customs Brokers and Forwarders Association of America (NCBFAA) and the Airports Council International-North America (ACI-NA) on the survey. The ultimate deliverable is a Recommendation Paper highlighting the congestion challenges as well as proposed solutions.

The survey generated hundreds of responses and Donna Mullins, Vice President of AfA member Kale Info Solutions, and Chair of the ACC is optimistic that said paper will be put to use. ACC additionally intends to present its potential solutions to members of Congress as well as the Secretary of Transportation. They’ve received strong buy-in across the supply chain, including but not limited to forwarders, ground handlers, trucking and tech companies, airlines, and airports.

If the slow-moving tsunami is indeed upon us, a coordinated response is going to be critical. The ACC’s next steps and deliverables are said to be decided at the end of May.

Maersk Finalizes Acquisition of Pilot Freight Services

A.P. Moller – Maersk (Maersk) has completed its acquisition of US-based Pilot Freight Services.

Maersk first announced its intention to acquire the company in February this year, aiming to further extend its integrated logistics offering.

The strategic move is said to benefit customers by offering customized international, domestic, and cross-border logistics to Maersk’s North America landside logistics capabilities for business-to-business (B2B) and business-to-consumer (B2C) distribution models.

By acquiring Pilot, the Danish Giant extends its end-to-end offerings deeper into the North American supply chain of its customers.

“Our customers are looking for us to accelerate their supply chain speed, remove handoffs and constantly improve their end-to-end, omni-channel business model to reach their financial growth goals,” said Narin Phol, Regional Managing Director of Maersk North America.

“Pilot’s expertise and existing infrastructure enables us to achieve these goals by creating more agile, nimble supply chains to serve customers the way they want to be served.”

Zach Pollock, CEO of Pilot Freight Services, added: “Teaming up with an industry leader like Maersk is a natural fit and will enable our company to tap into significant, new future growth opportunities for our customers and employees.

“We like Maersk’s continuous improvement mindset and active investment pattern in expanding supply chain solutions, so we’re excited to work together in our expanded role.”

The transaction price of $1.68 billion equals to an enterprise value of $1.8 billion.

Maersk has also recently been crowned the second largest container carrier in the world by Alphaliner.

According to recent data, the shipping line has a total capacity of 4,242,430 TEU across 729 vessels – the largest fleet recorded. It also has 29 vessels with a combined capacity of 319,100 TEU on order.

MSC took the top spot with a total capacity of 4,352,617 TEU across 665 ships. A further 102 vessels with the ability to carry 1,338,468 TEU are currently on order.

The International Air Cargo Association (TIACA) announced the launch of the Regional Symposium series. The series is aimed at engaging and bringing the air cargo community together to discuss issues that we are facing at a regional level. The kick-off event will be held in Amsterdam and will be hosted by Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.

The Regional Symposiums are designed to identify specific issues on a regional level that TIACA can incorporate into our overall work on behalf of the industry. The program will include important discussions on sustainability, market challenges, people issues and the economic outlook.  Digitalization, safety and security issues will also feature highly on the program.

Each Symposium will develop a Regional Action plan that will be incorporated into TIACA strategic objectives and activities.   The price point (or attendance fees) is set low to encourage both members and non-members to join so that we can get a full understanding of the local needs for air cargo.

Steven Polmans, Chairman TIACA emphasized TIACA is committed to being connected to their membership and by organizing the Regional Symposiums, they are able to interact more intimately with their members in each region and discuss what issues they face on a day-to-day basis adding that TIACA is greatly appreciative for the support of Amsterdam Airport Schiphol for inviting them to Amsterdam to launch the inaugural event.

cargoai donation Qatar Airways Cargo Teams Up with Cainiao to Launch a Weekly Charter Flight Linking China and Brazil

Qatar Airways Cargo Announces Chapter 3 of WeQare “Let’s Stand Together”

Qatar Airways Cargo continues its commitment by launching Chapter 3 of its WeQare program, “Let’s Stand Together”. Chapter 3 involves a big donation drive that seeks to gather donations in kind for children, from April 26 to May 10 2022.

Commitment, care and charity means a lot to Qatar Airways Cargo. The success of the first two chapters of the WeQare program demonstrated it very well. Chapter 1, “One Million Kilos” launched in July 2020 led the way by providing the free transport of 1 million kilos of humanitarian aid and medical equipment to charitable organizations. As for Chapter 2, “Rewild the Planet”, Qatar Airways Cargo committed to preserve wildlife and endangered animals and to transport them back to their natural habitat free of charge.

Aware of the importance of perpetuating this solidarity, the cargo carrier announced Chapter 3, Let’s Stand Together. Through this new chapter, Qatar Airways Cargo wants to convey the idea that together we can achieve great things. For this chapter, the company is organizing a collection of in kind donations for children. The donation drive focuses on three aspects: education, sports and fun. Thus, Qatar Airways Cargo is collecting study material (books, school bags, pencils), clothes and sports items (socks, soccer balls, sneakers, jerseys) as well as toys, musical instruments and board games. Any donation for children is welcome, as long as it is clean, in good condition and without batteries.

The collection of the donations is rolled out worldwide, and open for business partners, friends, families and anyone who is willing to participate in this great movement of solidarity that will last until May 10, 2022. To collect all the donations, each station of the company has its own collection point, where people can drop off their donations. Qatar Airways Cargo has also opened six donation collection points for its employees, as well as a public collection point in Doha.

The donations will be sent in by Qatar Airways Cargo global offices to its hub in Doha where a massive sorting activity will take place on 17 May, following which the donations will be sent all over the world. In line with its commitment to sustainability,  Qatar Airways Cargo will also offset the CO2 emissions of the donated items.

For children to remain children, Let’s Stand Together, because #WeQare.

Maersk Reveals Focus on Air Cargo

The leading shipping lines continue their expansion into airfreight, with Maersk announcing on Friday (08/04/22) the creation of a new business called Maersk Air Cargo. This will be a physical aircraft operator that will act as the air freight provider for the logistics operations of the Maersk Group.

Essentially this is a rebranding of Maersk’s existing air freighter business, Star Air, with the significance of the move possibly being in the re-naming. Rather than a somewhat peripheral subsidiary like Star Air, the intention seems to make Maersk Air Cargo a core market offer from Maersk Group. As the company states in its press release, “Maersk’s ambition is to have approximately one-third of its annual air tonnage carried within its own controlled freight network. This will be achieved through a combination of owned and leased aircraft, replicating the structure that the company has within its ocean fleet.

The remaining capacity will be provided by strategic commercial carriers and charter flight operators”. Surely the most important line here is “replicating the structure that the company has within its ocean fleet”, suggesting that Maersk aims to become as much of an airfreight company as it is a shipping line.

It is interesting that the head of Maersk Group’s ‘Logistics and Services’ business is a former CEVA executive. He comments that Maersk Logistics and Services views air freight as “a crucial enabler of flexibility and agility in global supply chains as it allows our customers to tackle time-critical supply chain challenges and provides transport mode options for high value cargo”. This is a clear statement that Maersk is aiming for a high- to very high-level of vertical integration.

Not only that, but Maersk has also outlined plans to develop Billund airport as its “air freight hub”. It is unclear if this will just be a base for administration and maintenance, or if Maersk envision a hub within an airfreight route network. Bearing in mind Maersk’s shipping operations emphasize networked operations, it may not be surprising if it is the latter.

Maersk Group has long had an interest in air transport, but the creation of Maersk Air Cargo goes beyond this in its implications. It is another significant step towards Maersk becoming a multi-sector vertically integrated, asset-based logistics provider where ships are just one asset class.
