Shanghai Port Sets Historic Milestone with 50 Million TEUs in Annual Throughput
The Port of Shanghai has made history as the first in the world to handle over 50 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) in annual container throughput, extending its 14-year streak as the world’s busiest container port. This achievement underscores China’s dominant role in global trade and logistics, Xinhua reported on Monday.
A Global Trade Powerhouse
Shanghai Port’s extensive network connects to more than 700 ports across 350 international routes, spanning over 200 countries and regions. According to officials at Shanghai International Port (Group) Co., Ltd. (SIPG), the surge in volume is driven by rising export demand, international transfers, and ship-to-ship operations. Ship-to-ship transfers alone are expected to hit a record 60% in 2024, further boosting throughput.
Efficiency Through Automation
The port’s efficiency has been revolutionized by the Yangshan phase IV automated terminal, launched in 2017. This advanced facility has increased operational efficiency by 30% while reducing workforce requirements by 70%, cementing Shanghai’s reputation for innovation in logistics.
A Sustainable Future
In addition to its operational success, Shanghai Port is charting a course toward sustainability. It has partnered with ports in Los Angeles and Hamburg to create eco-friendly shipping corridors. SIPG energy manager Luo Wenbin highlighted plans to establish Shanghai as a green energy hub by 2030, with major investments in LNG and green methanol fueling capacity.
As Shanghai Port continues to break records and adopt cutting-edge practices, it solidifies its position as a global leader in maritime logistics and sustainable innovation.
