Rail Freight Updates: New Locomotives, Contracts, and Fleet Modernization in 2026

According to Railway Gazette, Wabtec’s factory in Brazil has produced the initial unit of a 26-locomotive order for the timber firm Arauco. The same customer has also placed an order for over 700 wagons with another manufacturer. This new fleet is planned to begin operations in 2027 on a private line connecting a pulp mill to the national rail infrastructure.

Progress Rail has completed the transfer of four modern locomotives to Lake State Railway in Michigan. This move is part of the short line’s plan to update its equipment, which allowed for the retirement of five older units and a notable decrease in emissions.

In late March, a leasing firm provided a multi-system electro-diesel locomotive to Raildox to assist with the growth of its cross-border freight business. The operator’s managing director cited performance and cross-border functionality as decisive factors, with plans to expand services toward eastern Europe.

DB Cargo UK has entered into a long-term agreement to transport finished vehicles from a manufacturing plant in Merseyside to Southampton port. While currently running several weekly services, volume is anticipated to increase gradually.

Following the divestment of its intermodal operations, the car transport company Transfesa Logistics has been rebranded as DB Cargo Iberia.

Separately, CZ Loko is set to supply two shunting locomotives to a Czech strategic resources agency, accompanied by a multi-year maintenance and support package.
