Port of New York and New Jersey Setting Records in 2016

The Port of New York and New Jersey set a new cargo volume record for February 2016, handling 287,197 cargo containers for the month, a 12.4 percent increase over the previous record of 255,534 containers set in 2015.

For the first two months of 2016, the port’s cargo volumes are 7.1 percent ahead of last year’s record setting numbers.

The February numbers were driven by 7.4 percent increase in import loaded containers (up from 137,797 containers in 2015 to 148,048 in 2016) and export loaded containers (up 6.6 percent from 57,470 containers in 2015 to 61,278 containers in 2016).

During February 2016, cargo containers shipped by the Port Authority’s ExpressRail system also set a new monthly record for February, handling 41,837 containers, up 16.8 percent over the previous February record set in 2015 of 35,818 containers.

In February, the port handled 43,028 vehicles, a 32.5 percent increase over the 32,485 vehicles handled in February 2015.
