The Port of Long Beach has approved $58.2 million to expand the use of zero-emission technologies throughout its operations, according to a report from Container News.

This funding comes from California’s System-Wide Investment in Freight Transport (SWIFT) program. The initiative is designed to support cleaner freight transportation, enhance cargo movement, and reduce environmental effects on nearby communities.

The investment will pay for 61 zero-emission cargo-handling machines and 21 charging units. It will also fund the deployment of six zero-emission harbor craft, five cleaner harbor vessels, and one zero-emission locomotive.

The port stated that the investment supports its objective of becoming the world’s first zero-emission port.

Dr. Noel Hacegaba, CEO of the Port of Long Beach, commented that expanding the port’s clean technology portfolio is essential for the future of goods movement and for the health of surrounding communities. He added that the port is shaping the future by deploying the latest zero-emission equipment now.

Frank Colonna, President of the Long Beach Harbor Commission, noted that the new funding builds on the port’s broader SWIFT program. He said the investment will speed up the transition to zero-emission operations while improving the reliability and efficiency of cargo movement.
