The fourth round of trade negotiations between Mexico and the United States will not proceed next week and may instead be scheduled for October, according to a senior Mexican official cited by Reuters. The official, Luis Rosendo Gutierrez, Mexico’s deputy economy minister for foreign trade, attributed the postponement to scheduling conflicts, including Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to the United States and the approaching G20 summit.

Gutierrez indicated that despite the interruption to formal rounds, technical coordination with the US Trade Representatives Office continues on a daily basis. The talks aim to secure an interim bilateral arrangement that could give Mexico relief from certain US tariffs while addressing American demands related to automotive content and Chinese investment.

Gutierrez told reporters after the bi-national convention of the business group the American Society of Mexico in Mexico City that the priority is reducing Section 232 tariffs on steel, aluminum and automobiles. The negotiation agenda has grown from 54 issues to nearly 90, a development Gutierrez characterized as the natural evolution of complex topics such as digital platform regulation.
