Layoffs continue to affect the logistics and supply chain sectors, with companies in California, Georgia, and Michigan announcing 1,967 job cuts in the past week, as reported by FreightWaves. International Paper accounts for the largest portion, eliminating 1,093 positions in Georgia as it permanently closes its Savannah and Riceboro containerboard mills and related operations by the end of September. These closures align with a broader trend of industry consolidation, reflected in data from the IndexBox platform which shows a year-over-year decline in production output for certain packaging materials.

Other significant cuts include 192 layoffs from Amazon delivery service provider Web to Door across three California locations, and 150 temporary layoffs at Silgan Containers’ facilities in Modesto. Hormel Foods will end bacon production at its Tucker, Georgia plant, resulting in 135 job losses, while API Logistics Warehouse Management Services will cut 118 jobs in Lithia Springs after losing a major client. Further reductions are underway at J.B. Hunt, which is closing a Home Depot distribution center in Lithonia, eliminating 70 positions, and at DP World, which is shutting a Michigan facility and laying off 70 workers.
