U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to impose a 25% tariff on autos and auto parts is set to impact nearly $600 billion worth of imports, extending to all computer imports, including laptops. According to a Reuters analysis, the tariffs will affect nearly 150 categories of auto parts starting May 3, following the midnight activation of tariffs on vehicle imports.

The comprehensive list includes engines, transmissions, lithium-ion batteries, and other significant components, alongside more affordable parts like tires, shock absorbers, spark plug wires, and brake hoses. Notably, the inclusion of the four-digit tariff code for computers, a major import category valued at $138.5 billion in 2024, has caught many by surprise.
