The Mexican automobile manufacturing industry started of 2018 with a bang, setting all-time monthly highs for vehicle production and exports during January.

The Mexican Association of the Automotive Industry (AMIA) reported that a total of 303,755 vehicles were produced during the month, four percent more than in January 2017. Vehicle exports reached 231,088 in January, representing a 9.2-percent increase year over year.

Most of January’s exports were destined for the United States, 178,677 units or 77.3 percent of the total. Canada took 17,102 vehicles, or 7.4 percent, while Germany received 7,496, or 3.2 percent. Mexico now supplies 15.5 percent of total vehicles sold in the US country, according to the AMIA.

The German automaker Audi produced 13,633 vehicles in Mexico during January, 9,214 of them exported. Audi began production of its Q5 model in 2016 at its manufacturing plant in San José Chiapa, Puebla. During 2017, it produced a total of 158,550 vehicles.

AMIA projects that the Mexican industry will raise total annual production to five-million cars by 2020. Last year saw the production of 3.9 million units. BMW and Daimler-Nissan will add to that figure when their new factories in San Luis Potosí and Aguascalientes start production.
