Construction of the new deep seaport in France to start in 2019
Port-La Nouvelle is France’s third-largest port on the Mediterranean. Owned by the Regional Council of OCCITANIE Pyrénées-Méditerranée and managed by the Chamber of Commerce of Aude, the port has built a solid reputation for reliability. It handles two million tons of cargo per year, 60 percent of that liquid bulk. In 2017, tonnage increased by 4.86 percent.
In order to boost the regional economy, the second largest region in France and a powerful economic territory, fifth in France in terms of GDP, the port authority has planned an ambitious deep seaport expansion which can be considered a brand new port. The future port will accommodate ocean-going vessels up to 14.50 meters draft and its location will allow easy rail distribution to Europe.
In order to strengthen the port attractiveness, the port authority will put to place an innovative port management. They are looking for a private partner or group of partners ready to accompany the regional council through a long-term contract starting in 2021, with an intended duration of 30 years. The public-private partnership will be in charge to finance and build the terminals, operate the port and manage the global infrastructure. Such an organization is unique for a commercial seaport in France and should particularly suit investors willing to develop their activities in the western Mediterranean.
In 2019, the regional council will build and finance two breakwaters in order to create a new outer harbor as well as an industrial quay for the construction of offshore floating windmills, with two tank farms located nearby. In addition, a land of 50 acres (with possible further extension) is already available to build and develop a liquid terminal. New terminals would be created on 150 acres and a land of 200 acres will be prepared for industrial sites and logistics facilities.
The long-term aim of this greenfield port is to develop traffic while attracting new projects and trades. Accordingly, the OCCITANIE Region intends to play a major role in the Mediterranean market. Investors are welcome to share the regional vision consisting of regular investment policy in the blue economy that make the region one of the most ambitious for operators and shippers looking for new and innovative opportunities.
