The American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) has named the winners of the 2016 Environmental Improvement and its Information Technology award competitions.

AAPA’s Information Technology Awards program, which began in 2002, highlights port technology accomplishments in the areas of port operations and management systems and in improvements in intermodal freight transportation. This year’s IT Awards program winner for improvements in intermodal freight transportation category is the Halifax Port Authority for its submission, The Big Lift – Air Gap Monitoring During Bridge Reconstruction Project. Winning for port operations and management systems this year is the Port of Los Angeles with its entry, Achieving an ISO 27001 Information Security Management System.

“We appreciate every entrant and congratulate every winner in this year’s AAPA awards programs for investing the time to share their work, get peer review from the judges, and highlight best practices and lessons learned,” said Kurt Nagle, AAPA president and CEO. “When port authorities work with their many audiences, including their communities, business leaders and policymakers, to develop projects like the ones entered into these competitions, they’re better able to demonstrate their tremendous value as drivers of economic development, environmental enhancement, and job creation.”

Since 1973, AAPA’s Environmental Improvement Awards program has recognized activities which benefit the environment at its member ports. This year’s awards program had winners in three categories: environmental enhancement; mitigation; and comprehensive environmental management.

The winner for environmental enhancement was the Port of Long Beach for its entry, Beneficial Reuse of Dredged Sediments in the Middle Harbor Slip 1 Fill. The winner in the mitigation category was the Maryland Port Administration, with its successful project, Baltimore Inner Harbor Water Wheel. Winning for comprehensive environmental management award was the Port of Tacoma with its entry, Stormwater Management Guidance Manual: Customizing and Optimizing Stormwater Requirements for Port-Specific Land Uses and Customers.
