Amazon Freight’s Evolution: From Internal Logistics to External Solutions
At the F3: Future of Freight Festival, Amazon Freight General Manager Ari Silkey detailed the evolution of the company’s transportation network. According to a report from Freightwaves, Silkey described how the company has turned its internal logistics expertise into external solutions for shippers through years of deliberate, incremental innovation.

From an Idea to a Vast Network
Silkey, who has scaled Amazon’s transportation operation over nine years, stated the company started with a technology-first mindset. The Amazon Relay mobile app served as its foundation, with hardware, software, and sensors later added to trailers and tractors. What began with trailer purchases in 2015 has grown into a fleet of more than 70,000 Amazon-branded trailers and 24,000 intermodal containers.
Solving Real Problems with Technology
Silkey stressed that every technological investment must solve a real problem, guided by a philosophy of “customer obsession.” The innovation process involves significant trial and error. To address industry challenges like fragmented data and visibility gaps, Amazon begins on the ground with driver feedback.
Through ride-alongs and roundtables, drivers indicated they wanted trip planning tools for preparation, not just navigation. This led to the pre-trip briefing feature, which provides route details and weather updates. The system identifies the safest routes based on road data. To prevent cargo theft, drivers now use photo verification before and after pickups.
Trailers as Connected Data Sources
Amazon began rethinking trailers as connected data sources in 2016. Today, its trailers include GPS tracking, tire inflation systems, and sensors monitoring doors, cargo, and trailer health. Monitoring tire pressure trends allows maintenance teams to address issues proactively across the fleet.
Managing Disruption in Real Time
Silkey pointed to disruption management as a use case for generative AI within the Relay Operation Center. When a driver calls with an issue, agents use tools to verify the situation, check the freight’s schedule, and determine the best response. A chat assistant lets agents ask follow-up questions to resolve issues faster, improving performance and the driver experience.
The Long Game
Silkey closed by saying true transportation innovation is about steady, behind-the-scenes progress, not sudden breakthroughs. The goal is moving goods more safely and efficiently. The systems powering Amazon’s own network now support external shippers through Amazon Freight, offering access to technology built for a complex supply chain.
