2026: The Year Technology Becomes Table Stakes for Freight Forwarders
With 2026 on the horizon, freight forwarders face a turning point. Their traditional strength—trusted shipper relationships and reliable service—remains essential, but it is no longer enough. The industry has reached a decisive moment: adopting logistics technology is no longer optional. The day of reckoning has arrived.

Technology readiness must now sit at the top of every forwarder’s agenda. Static strategies will not withstand the headwinds of 2026. Instead, forwarders must embrace a bold, decisive mindset shift. The drivers are clear: heightened trade policy disruption, rising customer expectations, and accelerating AI-driven automation.
Magaya and Adelante SCM’s November 2024 State of Digitization in Freight Forwarding report underscored the urgency:
- Only 23% of forwarders had digitized at least 75% of their processes and transactions.
- 38% of shippers reported being “slightly satisfied” or “not satisfied at all” with their forwarders’ technological capabilities.
The gap between shipper expectations and forwarder performance is stark. Shippers increasingly view advanced technology not as a differentiator, but as a baseline requirement. Those who fail to meet this expectation risk losing customers; those who excel will grow and gain market share.
New Magaya and Adelante SCM survey data from July 2025, based on responses from 110 freight forwarders and logistics service providers, shows how the industry is beginning to respond:
- 45% are automating workflows for documentation, compliance, and invoicing.
- 38% are improving real-time visibility and milestone tracking.
- 35% are upgrading freight forwarding platforms, with investments in reporting, analytics, and dashboards.
For shippers, the expectation is clear: forwarders must accelerate digital transformation—not to replace the human element of logistics, but to elevate it. Technology should deliver timely, actionable insights that enhance trust and strengthen relationships.
As 2026 approaches, the forwarders that succeed will be those who blend their human expertise with digital innovation to stay ahead in an environment where global supply chains are increasingly complex and data-driven.
