Learn More About Trucking

There is much truth in that adage, “If you bought it, a truck brought it.”

Ships and planes transport products around the world, but the last stage in the journey to their final destination is frequently via truck. This is true not only of products reaching store shelves, but the transportation of raw materials to factories at the start of the manufacturing process. In the U.S alone, more than 80 percent of all communities rely on trucks for the delivery of food, fuel, clothing and medicine.

Trucking has been one of the foremost growth industries in the United States since the end of World War II. Trucking companies provide a wide variety of services, including truckload, less-than-truckload, consoolidation, and delivery.

  • Dedicated Contract

Dedicated carriage refers to an arrangement in which a trucking service provider puts a truck, or a fleet of trucks, at the disposal of a shipper customer and runs their trucking operation for them. A truck traveling down the interstate bearing the name and logo of a retailer or other company is more likely to be owned and operated by a trucking company under dedicated contract carriage than it is by the company itself.

  • Dry Van

Dry vans are the most common type of conveyance hauled by commercial trucking companies. They have the ability to carry a wide variety of freight and range in length between 26 feet and 53 feet.

  • Expedited

Trucking companies offer a variety of services to help shippers get unexpected, last-minute, emergency, or otherwise prority shipments to their customers when they need them. Some trucking companies specialize in providing same-day or next-day service within a specified radius.

  • Final Mile

Final mile delivery is one of the most challenging supply-chain issues, especially in this age of e-commerce, when many companies deliver products directly to consumers in their homes and offices. Final-mile carriers have the equipment, routes and networks in place to make it happen seamlessly.

  • Flatbed

Flatbed trucks are those which carry heavy items such as equipment and lumber, which are tied down to an open platform rather that loaded into a trailer. Contracting for flatbed involves more than finding the right equipment. The trucker also needs to have expertise in rigging the load to the flabed, and, in the case of extra heavy and oversize loads, in securing the necessary permits to move the load over the road.

  • Hazardous

Hazardous materials require special handling, routing, documentation and, often, equipment. There are federal regulations, and often state and local ones, that restrict where and how hazmats may be transported. Carriers and 3PLs with expertise in this area make sure everything goes smoothly.

  • LTL

Less-than-truckload carriers operate much more complex networks, routes, and facilities than do truckload carriers, making LTL more expensive per pound than truckload. A shipment tendered to an LTL is likely to be routed through a cross-dock operation where it is reloaded onto another truck for delivery.

  • Tank Car

Tank cars are designed to carry liquid cargoes, everything from gasoline to milk. Specialized equipment and knowledge of regulatory requirements are necessary to carry these loads.

  • Temp-Controlled

Temperature-controlled trailers are required for the transport of a variety of products, especially food. Today’s referigerated vans are computer controlled, allowing opertors to constantly monitor the temperature and detect any compromises to the product’s integrity.

  • Truckload

Truckload carriers cater to those shippers who can fill a trailer going from Point A to Point B. Many truckload carriers offer diversified services including brokerage, logistics, consolidation, dedicated services, and intermodal services.
