Samsung Heavy Industries, Ltd. broke the record for building the largest continership surpassing 20,000 TEU.

SHI held a naming ceremony for the first of four 20,150 TEU containerships, the MOL Triumph, ordered by Japan’s Mitsui OSK Lines, Ltd., in February 2015, in Geoje shipyard in March 15.

The MOL Triumph, with a length of 400 meters, breadth 58.8 meters, and depth 32.8 meters, is an ultra-large containership that can transport 20,150 containers. The eco-friendly ship boasts an array of energy-saving equipment designed by SHI including propeller, rudder valve, and stator.

SHI has been leading the market with operation-optimized hull design and record-breaking containership size. MOL has hailed SHI’s performance for zero incident construction for 15 months since steel cutting in January 2016.

Ocean carriers have been taking delivery of ever-larger containerships in recent years in order to reduce costs with economies of scale in an effort to squeeze profits out of lower freight rates. With the ocean shipping industry increasingly revolving around three large carrier alliances, the existing 2M Alliance, and the new THE Alliance and Ocean Alliances, whose operations are about to begin next month, very large containerships are expected to play increasingly important roles, especially in the key trades.

The MOL Triumph will be delivered to MOL on March 27 after finishing preparation for its maiden voyage.
