Evergreen Responds to Hanjin Disruptions
Introduces New Ecommerce Capability and Substitute Services
Evergreen Line has added new functions to its online ecommerce system in response to the unexpected service disruption caused by Hanjin Shipping.
Hanjin, once the world’s seventh largest container carrier, filed for bankruptcy on August 31.
As Evergreen and Hanjin are both members of the CKYHE alliance, the Hanjin debacle has caused delays to Evergreen Line’s cargoes already loaded on the Korean carrier’s vessels.
Evergreen’s new online functions enable customers to update the status of their cargoes and Hanjin’s vessel positions, including information about anchorage at or sailing to a particular port. Evergreen has also developed detailed service plans within its own network as an effective substitute to cover the affected services operated by Hanjin.
In addition to the ecommerce enhancement and substitute service solutions, Evergreen Line is conducting a fleet adjustment to meet customers’ demand for reliable service. Evergreen is also working with alliance partners, ports authorities, terminal operators and other service providers in the transportation service chain to offer necessary assistance to the customers impacted and endeavor to complete onward carriage where possible.
In the immediate aftermath of the Hanjin bankruptcy, Evergreen adopted a contingency plan designed to purge its system of Hanjin cargo. “No Evergreen Line cargo will be loaded on the vessels operated by Hanjin Shipping,” the company said, in a statement, at the time. “Hanjin Shipping cargo will not be allowed to load on the vessels operated by Evergreen Line.”
Since then, Evergreen has also asked Hanjin to discharge Evergreen cargoes at the first available port.
Evergreen said it will arrange in transiting and delivering containers to their final destinations. The carrier also reported that CKYE partners are discussing the possibility of sharing costs which otherwise would have been paid by Hanjin to enable Hanjin vessels to call at ports to discharge cargo belonging to clients of the CKYE carriers.
