New economic analysis prepared for Business Roundtable finds international trade supports 36 million— nearly one in five—jobs in the United States, with 11 million jobs supported by trade with Canada and Mexico.

In California, international trade supports 4,383,800—also nearly one in five—jobs in that state. A second analysis shows 1,364,900 California jobs are supported by trade with Northern American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) partners, Canada and Mexico. All of this underscores the importance of facilitating international trade.

These analyses – prepared by Trade Partnership Worldwide, LLC – find trade benefits the California economy by expanding markets for goods and services, lowering prices for California companies and consumers, and promoting international investment that creates jobs and economic growth in the state.

The analysis on trade and California jobs shows international trade facilitated $160 billion in California goods and $135.7 billion in California services exports in 2016 and that it lowers prices and increases choices for California companies and families, helping businesses to compete in global markets and families to stretch their paychecks further.

The analysis of NAFTA finds the agreement found that it facilitated $57 billion in California goods and services exports to Mexico and Canada in 2016. It also showed that 34 percent of California imports from NAFTA partners in 2016 contained inputs from US producers thanks to the integrated supply chains that NAFTA promotes.
